What is the Circle of Adults Approach?
The Circle of Adults is a structured, emotionally safe group problem-solving process designed to help professionals think deeply about complex situations. It was originally developed by Colin Newton and Derek Wilson to increase chances of inclusion and to reduce likelihood of permanent exclusions or special school placement by providing an effective facilitated process that allows exploration of emotional, systemic and psychological aspects of challenging situations. The process brings clarity, containment and collective insight to challenging educational and social-care scenarios.
What does it do for me?
Introduces you to a fresh process for working with groups to problem solve
Helps you make sense of situations that feel overwhelming or stuck
Brings fresh perspectives you wouldn’t reach alone
Reduces stress through shared thinking and emotional containment
Builds confidence in your next steps with clear, actionable strategies
Deepens your reflective practice skills for long-term professional growth
How does it do that?
The method uses:
Careful facilitation to guide the group through a predictable thinking structure
Graphic visuals to slow down thinking and reveal patterns
Collective intelligence, where multiple viewpoints deepen understanding
A psychologically safe environment, allowing honest exploration
Structured stages that move from describing, to reframing, to problem-solving
When combined, these elements create a powerful thinking space that leads to clarity, empathy and new solutions.
Why should I believe it works?
It has been used successfully for over 25 years in thousands of schools, teams, multi agency settings and organisations
It was created by Colin Newton and Derek Wilson, both experienced psychologists and facilitators committed to inclusive education for all
The approach is grounded in psychodynamic theories, reflective practice, humanistic psychology and collaborative problem solving
Professionals repeatedly report breakthrough moments, reduced anxiety and practical next steps
The method is still widely used because it consistently delivers insight, containment and actionable solutions
Who Is This For?
Perfect for:
SENCos • Educational Psychologists • Trainee and Assistant EPs – Behaviour leads • Pastoral staff • Senior leaders • Inclusion teams • Social care professionals • Anyone facing a challenging situation who would benefit from structured group problem-solving.
